Made in the North photographic project started 28 years ago. My photographic career started in Rochdale, I gained a BA Honns Degree at Bradford University. Whilst studying my degree I was invited to New York to have my first exhibition with American photographer Edith Skinner.
I have been photographic people from the North of England ever since. My photographs are now in The National Portrait Gallery permanent collection, London.
I wrote to Alan Bennet many years ago to ask if I could photograph him for a project I was putting together for the last 25 years "Made in the North". Although he did not want his photograph taken he had the decency to send me a hand written post card explaining why.
After photographed Sir Nicolas Hytner at The National Theatre in London, he contacted Alan Bennet on my behalf and the rest is history.
