Mark Linkous — Sparklehorse
An American Songwriter and a Rare Photographic Encounter
Photographed by Paul Wolfgang Webster, 1997
Some photographs stay with you long after you have taken them. Others find their way back into your life years later, reminding you of the people you were fortunate enough to meet along the way.
In 1997, I had the privilege of photographing Mark Linkous at the Academy, Oxford Rd Manchester on my Nikon F3 Film Camera, Mark Linkous the creative force behind the American alternative rock project Sparklehorse. At the time, I could not have known that, nearly three decades later, I would be rediscovering these images in my photographic archive and reflecting on their significance.
Mark was a distinctive and imaginative songwriter whose music occupied a world of its own. His work connected with artists such as Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, Radiohead and The Flaming Lips, as well as filmmaker David Lynch. He had a remarkable ability to create music that felt intimate, unconventional and deeply personal.
Coming across these photographs again has reminded me why I have always believed in keeping an archive. As photographers, we capture moments without knowing how important they may become with time. An image that once recorded a single encounter can later become a valuable piece of musical history.
I feel fortunate to have photographed Mark and to be able to share these rare images with others who appreciate his music and legacy. For me, they are more than photographs of a musician; they are a personal record of a moment in time, preserved on film and brought back into the light.
