Manchester Rock ’n’ Roll
Capturing the Sound of a City
Manchester has always punched above its weight in the world of rock ’n’ roll, producing artists and bands whose music has travelled around the globe. From the raw energy of the Buzzcocks and the rebellious spirit of the Sex Pistols to the legendary sounds of Joy Division, New Order, The Smiths, Happy Mondays and Oasis, Manchester has helped shape the history of British music.
Throughout my photographic career, I have had the privilege of photographing musicians who have defined generations, including Tony H Wilson, John Marr The Smiths, Sex Pistols front man Johnny Lydon, Echo &the Bunneymen Ian McCulloch, Shaun Ryder, Bez, Guy Garvey, The Libertines Pete Doherty, the Beatles Pete Best, Graham Nash and The late Mark E Smith and other influential figures from Manchester’s rich musical heritage, alongside artists from further afield who have performed in the city.
From the legendary Hacienda and the Manchester Apollo to the Free Trade Hall, Band on the Wall and the smaller venues that have nurtured generations of musicians, Manchester has always had a unique relationship with live music. These stages have witnessed unforgettable performances, emerging talent and the birth of musical movements that would influence the world.
My photographs capture more than the artists themselves. They preserve the characters, atmosphere and spirit of a city whose musical identity continues to inspire. Each image offers a glimpse into a world of creativity, rebellion and cultural change — a visual record of the people who helped make Manchester a global music capital.
Here is a selection of my favourite photographs, taken over the years. They form part of my personal archive of rock ’n’ roll, celebrating Manchester’s extraordinary musical legacy and the artists who have left their mark on the city.
I hope you enjoy exploring these photographs as much as I have enjoyed capturing them.
